How To Avoid Toxic Plants When You Buy Wild Edible Plants Of California

Consumers are probably used to buying their fresh produce in stores. Store-bought produce is usually in very healthy condition and looks tasty. Its size is also impressive. The unadvertised fact, however, is that many species can be harvested in the wild, naturally. People may be interested in doing this, and so they should investigate the wild foods of California or try to buy wild edible plants of California.

Commercial or store-bought produce has certain characteristics that are noticeable and which may discourage people from trying to harvest their own produce elsewhere. Firstly, it is large and healthy. It appears to be almost too attractive to be genuine produce. This is so because the produce in stores is commercially cultivated using industrial methods.

Commercial agriculture is an activity of mass production. Farms harvest in tonnages and they deploy commercial tactics to cultivate bigger, more marketable fruit and vegetables. Ordinary citizens cannot grow produce to these standards themselves. Making a comparison with store-bought produce is not worth your while because you cannot use the methods that the commercial farmers use, so you won't be able to reproduce the fruit and vegetables that they cultivate on their farms.

Another issue is genetic modification. GM crops are not uncommon these days, and, once again, the use of natural seed or natural species is not going to produce the fruit and vegetables that you see in the store. These crops have been engineered to look like that and sometimes the purpose of the engineering is to give them a purely cosmetic effect, such as lasting color or the unnaturally prolonged appearance of freshness. This is cosmetic and is pursued for marketing purposes.

If you want to harvest your own wild produce, you are taking the route that some people do in trying to source their fruit and vegetables in other places. They may either want to make use of alternative places, or they want to experiment with wild plants. There are some issues that you need to be aware of, though.

An important consideration is as to what you are going to harvest. You need to know what species are available in the wild and which ones you should harvest. Not all plants can be picked and eaten. Some of them have no nutritional value while others are toxic. The toxicity of the plant does not automatically imply that it is lethal to people but it may cause adverse symptoms or simply be unpleasant to eat. Nutritionally, the plant may be useless and then the harvesting exercise is a waste of time.

A particular example is the mushroom, which has a legendary reputation as being toxic. This is not a fallacy. Some mushrooms can literally kill you. As a background point of advice, a mushroom that is brightly colored or very conspicuous in its appearance is probably more poisonous than others. But this is not a rule of nature and as such you should be completely certain about any mushroom that you harvest and consume.

The law itself is another consideration, and it is an important one. Do not harvest plants in protected areas such as reserves, and do not harvest protected species. The authorities are trying to conserve the latter so you should observe the regulations.
