How Shelf Stable Meals Are Made

Humans have always endeavored to find ways of easing the burdens of life. The onset of shelf stable meals is one such endeavor that has revolutionized the way we approach preparation and storage of food. These foods usually have undergone an elaborate procedure to ensure that their shelf life is much longer than their normal durations.

In the olden ages when such techniques where not a commonality, fresh produce that had not been eaten or sold would usually go to waste. Fruits and vegetables suffered the most since they take a very short time between harvesting and going bad. Nowadays we all have these preservations methods to thank for our ability to enjoy a huge variety of delicacies.

Due to the many preservation methods, a wide selection of delicacies and recipes can be derived. Some of the foods are nuts, grains and meats.

These types of foods have played an important role in helping us understand the way different cultures enjoy their delicacies. The ease by which these products can be packaged and transported to destinations all over the world have enabled us to experience the different cultures without having to go through the hustle of travelling abroad.

An excellent example is the kosher meals. According o the Jewish tradition, there are foods that are considered fit for consumption while others are unholy. These types of foods as outlined in the books of law of the bible are what are referred to as kosher foods. Thanks to traditional and modern preservation techniques, the world can now share in this great Jewish culture. Kosher recipes and foods are readily available in supermarkets and food stores all over the country. Those who are gluten intolerant can opt to go for the gluten free kosher meals.

The techniques used for preservation may be natural or artificial. Some natural ways include preservation by sun drying, smoking or even salting. Foods preserved by these methods usually do not last for extended periods such as a year. Scientific methods such as hydrogenation and ionization have been seen to extend shelf life for up to a year or even more. Drying as a technique can also be done via specialized machines such as ovens and desiccators.

Hydrogenation as a method of preservation is however controversial. This is due to the health concerns of transforming normal fat molecules into Trans fatty acid molecules. Trans fats such as cholesterol have been linked to higher cases of hypertension and vascular ailments. Ionization on the other hand raises concerns on the effects of radiation on food. Scientific research has however endeavored to dispel these claims but still the consumers remain a bit skeptical about its consumption.

The government in an effort to protect consumers against harmful products has enacted strict laws concerning the consumption of preserved foods. They have to be properly labeled not to misinform the buyer. The buyer should be in a position to understand all the constituent ingredients of what goes into their body. Shelf preservation endeavors to ensure that the nutrients gained from food is not lost during preservation. The color texture and taste is also of equal importance to the final consumer.
