How to Help Encoding Curriculum Elements for Intergeo ?

Intergeo makes available resources in dynamic geometry to all because people from everywhere can contribute to it.

What is it about?

The inter2geo database gathering resources making use of dynamic geometry allows the contributors to mention the competencies the resource requires from the students using it and the mathematical topics (mathematical notions) at stake in the resource.

For example a resource displaying a segment and asking a student to construct a dynamic isosceles triangle with base this segment requires from students knowledge about the perpendicular bisector of a segment and of the property of equidistance of all its points to the endpoints of the segment.

  • topics such as "perpendicular bisector", "equidistant", "isosceles triangle"
  • and competency such as "know characteristic property of perpendicular bisector".
The Intergeo project started to construct an ontology gathering such competencies and topics by encoding some French, Spanish and English curricula. Competencies and topics were extracted from those curricula and added to the ontology. This ontology is available The ontology is structured as a tree.

In this structure "Know characteristic property of perpendicular bisector" is a child of the class "Know theorems and properties", itself child of the superclass "Know".

Of course in its present state, the ontology does not cover all competencies and topics of maths curricula across the world or even across Europe. Many competencies and topics are still missing.

If you support the idea of making resources in dynamic geometry available and usable by all teachers from various countries with different languages, help us and enrich the set of competencies and topics in your language.

There are three possible ways for contributing to the ontology (called GeoSkills) by using the editor of competencies (called CompEd) :

  • as a suggestion maker;
  • as a translator;
  • as a curriculum encoder.

Making suggestions

It may happen, that, when, for example, trying to add a resource to the Intergeo database of resources, and browsing the proposed topics and competencies, you do not find the appropriate ones for your resource. You want to suggest to add to GeoSkills one or several new topics or competencies. Use the suggest feature of CompEd. Your suggestions will be processed and incorporated by the team of curriculum encoders.

You want to translate the existing elements of GeoSkills in your language which is not one of the available languages (English, French and Spanish) in order to make Intergeo resources available to the teachers of your country. You are welcome! Please, candidate to Intergeo by to complete . Once your candidature accepted, you will be able to add the translation of all existing topics and competencies and edit all names of Geoskills in your own language.

Curriculum encoding

The curriculum of your country is only partly or not taken into account in GeoSkills and you want to create systematically in the ontology the needed competencies and topics attached to a curriculum for one or several levels. You are also very welcome! Please, candidate and become a member of the Intergeo curriculum encoder team by registrering to the  curriculum encoders' community?.

Once your candidature accepted, you will be able to create all topics and competencies of a curriculum text (a standard, a textbook) in the language of the curriculum, and possibly edit names of already existing elements. You also are asked to annotate the curriculum text you browse. You should obtain an appropriate electronic version, add hyperlinks into this text linked to the competency and topic webview, and upload the document into the web application for further sharing.

How to make a suggestion?

  1. You identify a competency or a topic in your curriculum that you consider as important for the database. Try to formulate it.
  2. Search in CompEd by using key words in English, French or Spanish whether there is a competency similar to yours.
    1. whether it is a topic or a competency
    2. a topic group or a competency process it could be the child and for a competency mention to what existing topics it is related
  3. send your suggestion using the suggest feature (to arrive soon) or join the curriculum encoders' group.

  1. You joined the project Intergeo as a translator. Congratulations!
  2. Identify a topic or a competency that needs to be translated into your language. In CompEd, select and click on this topic (resp. competency) in the tree view or list view of topics (competencies). In the displayed page of the topic (competency), click on Add next to Names. In the displayed page with title Name Information,
    1. type the usual name of this topic (competency) in your language
    2. select your language in the pull down list of languages
    3. save
  3. In case you want to also add a less usual name or a false friend name, reiterate the operation but select the corresponding type of names  in the pull down list Common, Rare, Uncommon, False-Friend
  4. In case you want to correct a typo or improve the formulation of a name of a topic or a competency,
    1. select it in the tree view or list view of topics (competencies) and click
    2. in the displayed page of the topic (competency), click on Edit
    3. change its name and accordingly the URI

How to participate more?

You could become a curriculum translator or curriculum encoder. See the above description.

The first thing to do so is to register to the curriculum encoders' community.
